A Martha's Vineyard Party For President Obama

Harvard professor Charles Ogletree hosts a "social event" for the President...

President Obama
took a break from his summer vacation reading list for a fete at the Martha's Vineyard home of Harvard professor Charles Ogletree on Saturday. The late afternoon shindig at Ogletree's Oak Bluffs home was closed to press, but White House spokesman Josh Earnest described the outing as a "social event." Ogletree was mentor to Mr. Obama when he was President of Harvard Law School's Law Review while earning his degree. (Above: President Obama in the motorcade on the way to Ogletree's home; Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett, who also owns a home on the Vineyard, is in the foreground)

Among the guests were former Massachusetts Chief Justice Margaret Marshall and her husband, Anthony Lewis; film director Spike Lee; political power broker Vernon Jordan and his wife Ann Jordan; Harvard professors Henry Louis Gates Jr., Alan Dershowitz, and Rosabeth Moss Kanter; author Rose Styron; fishing guide Buddy Vanderhoop; and singer Kate Taylor.

During the party, President Obama’s daughters, Malia, 13, and Sasha, 10, visited the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Fair with friends. Trailed by Secret Service, they went on rides and sampled the local delicacies, according to local media.

Oak Bluffs is home to a large African American community, particularly in the summer. Ogletree is the founder and director of the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at Harvard Law School. First Lady Obama also earned her law degrees at Harvard. The event was the second evening social outing of the ten-day vacation: On Friday night, the President and Mrs. Obama dined at Beach Plum Inn and Restaurant in Menemsha, which is located close to their 28.5-acre rental estate. (Above: The President's motorcade on the way to Ogletree's residence)

The pool report:

At 5:20pm, POTUS arrived in Oak Bluffs for what principal deputy press secretary Josh Earnest described as a “social event” at the home of Professor Charles Ogletree. It is a quiet neighborhood of shingled homes near the intersection of Alpine Ave and California Ave. Small crowd with lawn chairs has gathered along Alpine Ave. At least one of the homes along Alpine had a white tent in the backyard. Many of the homes were shingled cottages in the classic Vineyard style. In some cases, porches were decorated with pots of hanging petunias and other flowers.

Near the event, which appeared to be between Hudson and California Ave on Alpine Street, one group had set up a sign that said: “Welcome Mr. President to Alpine Street.” Past Ogletree's home, closer to Hudson Ave, larger crowds had gathered to try to take pictures from a distance.

The motorcade left Blue Heron Farm at 5:03 PM, heading east in the direction of Oak Bluffs. No members of the family were visible as the motorcade passed or at any point during the trip. There was at least one van marked “Guest” in the motorcade.

The early part of the drive was mostly along the rural and wooded stretch in the middle of the Island so there weren’t many people along the route. After the motorcade turned on Barnes Road traffic held by police at the four way stop, at least one woman craned her neck out the window as the motorcade passed.

Earlier the pool was swept at one of the nearby farms in a barn area that housed some enormous John Deere tractors. Dutch Belted cows grazed in the distance (they are black and white with a distinctive white stripe). Lots of swooping birds (that appear to be swallows) between the barn and the herd.

Larger crowds along the route as the motorcade left the Oak Bluffs neighborhood.

At 6:27pm, the President's motorcade left the home of Professor Charles Ogletree in Oak Bluffs, and returned to Blue Heron Farm.

President Obama's 2011 Summer Reading List

White House releases the titles: Books about epic journeys, coming of age in unfamiliar lands, and hardboiled crime...

A White House official today announced President Obama's summer reading list for his ten-day vacation on Martha's Vineyard. The five books are about epic journeys, both real and imagined. They include crime, heartbreak, and high drama. On Friday morning, President Obama visited Bunch of Grapes bookstore in Vineyard Haven, accompanied by daughters Malia and Sasha. He purchased two of the books there, and brought three with him to the island, according to the official. Four are novels, and one is a massive, critically acclaimed work of African American history. The President will be enjoying his books in between ice cream runs, golfing, and working. (Above: At Bunch of Grapes on Friday)

At Bunch of Grapes, the President purchased:

The Bayou Trilogy, three novels by Daniel Woodrell. Collected in a single volume for the first time, Woodrell's stories are about "the adventures of Det. Rene Shade, an ex-boxer turned cop."

Rodin's Debutante, by Ward Just. The author's 17th novel is the tale of a boy who "comes of age in mid-20th-century Chicago and tries to find a way to create art in the face of the world's harshness."

President Obama brought these books with him:

To The End of The Land, a novel by David Grossman. Originally published in 2008 in Hebrew as A Woman Fleeing the News, the book tells the story of living in Israel during the era of terrorism and the occupation.

The Warmth of Other Suns, by Isabel Wilkerson. The author is a Pulitzer Prize winner, and the tome, published in 2010, is described as the "epic" story of America's Great Migration, documenting "the sweeping 55-year-long migration of black Americans from the South."

Cutting For Stone, a novel by Abraham Verghese. The author's first novel is about Marion and Shiva Stone, twin brothers "born of a secret union between a beautiful Indian nun and a brash British surgeon." They are orphaned, and the novel follows their triumphs and tribulations as they journey to America.

The President purchased several books for Malia and Sasha during the Bunch of Grapes visit, but there was no word from the White House on what these titles are. On Friday night, the President and First Lady Obama dined out for the first time during their vacation, visiting Beach Plum Inn and Restaurant in Menemsha, which is located close to their rental estate.

The Obamas Dine Out On Martha's Vineyard

President's first full day on vacation includes a run to bookstore, golf, and a dinner date with the First Lady...

President Obama
and First Lady Michelle Obama dined on Friday evening at a favorite haunt on Martha's Vineyard, the restaurant at the Beach Plum Inn in Menemsha. The lovely, intimate restaurant is perched atop a cliff, and has a stunning, panoramic view of Menemsha Harbor. The First Couple arrived at 7:38 PM, just in time for sunset. Mr. and Mrs. Obama dined at the Beach Plum last summer, too. Tonight, their dinner was two hours long. (Above: The President on Friday morning, outside a Bunch of Grapes bookstore)

The pool trailing the President did not see him arrive at or depart the restaurant, so it is unclear if the Obamas were on a date or joined by companions. The sustainably sourced menu features locally caught seafood from the Atlantic, as well as locally grown produce. The eatery is in a converted house at the end of a long, sandy lane. The interior is decorated with antique furniture, and aged fishing creels and crabbing baskets. White table cloths, mismatched floral arrangements and low candles enhance the "seaside country charm" effect. The Inn is just a short motorcade drive from the 28.5-acre rented estate, Blue Heron Farm in Chilmark, where the Obamas are spending their nine-day vacation.

Vacation fun...

Many of the First Family's activities today were as much of a deja vu as the Presidential dinner date. As he did last year, this morning President Obama took daughters Malia, 13, and Sasha, 10, to independent bookstore Bunch of Grapes, located in tourist hotspot Vineyard Haven. There was a meet n' greet with excited supporters, and then the First Dad and First Daughters shopped the stacks for about twenty minutes. They emerged carrying brown paper bags of books. Bookstore staff declined to comment on the Presidential purchase, unlike last year, when they were quick to spill the details. White House aides said the President's summer reading list would be released "later."

Later in the day, at 1:36 PM, the President played golf at the private Vineyard Golf Club in Edgartown. His golfing partners, per the White House, were Chicago pal Eric Whitaker, White House trip director Marvin Nicholson, and Michael Brush, White House senior advance lead.

The President began his first full day of vacation with briefing from senior advisors.

Info: The Beach Plum is at 50 Beach Plum Lane, PO Box 98, Menemsha, Martha's Vineyard, MA 02552. Phone: 508-645- 9454.

Hard At Work On The Vineyard...

The White House just released the first photo of President Obama on vacation in Martha's Vineyard.

The photo shows the President working, of course, since there has been much criticism about the President taking a holiday. He's receiving a national security briefing from John Brennan, Assistant to the President for Counterterrorism.

"This morning, the President received a briefing, on paper, from his economic team and the presidential daily briefing on national security from his top counterterrorism adviser, John Brennan," said spokesman Josh Earnest.

Obama Begins Vacation On Martha's Vineyard

President has no public events scheduled during nine-day vacation at Blue Heron Farm; top advisors on island, too...

President Obama starts his first full day of vacation on the island of Martha's Vineyard today. He'll be making ice cream runs, golfing, and cycling as he relaxes for nine days on the woodsy island off the coast of Massachusetts, according to a White House spokesman. After three days of talking corn seed and the economy in the heartland, President Obama--minus his family--left the White House to travel to the island on Thursday afternoon, accompanied by First Dog Bo. The First Family is staying at the privately owned Blue Heron Farm, a 28.5-acre estate in the township of Chilmark. They also rented the property the previous two summers. (Above: The President arrives at Martha's Vineyard Airport in West Tisbury, Thursday evening)

"I don't usually hang out with Red Sox fans," said President Obama, a White Sox enthusiast, as he mingled with excited locals at the Cape Cod airport, holding a baby clad in the enemy team's gear. The baby's thrilled mom snapped photos. Mr. Obama has no public events scheduled through Saturday, Aug. 27, when he returns to Washington.

"This is an opportunity for the President to spend a little time away from the spotlight with his wife and two daughters," said Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest, adding that the summer holiday will be much like those in 2009 and 2010.

The President is expected to "go out and get ice cream and ride bicycles," Earnest said, and play golf, "a hobby he enjoys."

The island has been a retreat for Presidents and their families for decades, including the Kennedys and the Clintons, who own a home there. It has miles of pristine beaches and hiking and cycling trails, and a vibrant restaurant scene.

The estate...

There's plenty of privacy at the vacation retreat, which rents for $50,000 a night: Blue Heron Farm is at the end of a mile-long driveway. It has four different dwellings, including a white Victorian farm house, a reconstructed "Pennsylvania hay barn" and a "Vermont shed." There's also an apple orchard, vegetable gardens, a swimming pool, golf practice tee and a small basketball court. (Above: The President's motorcade turns into Blue Heron Farm on Thursday evening)

The property overlooks Tisbury Great Pond. Last year's island idyll included runs for treats to ice creamery Mad Martha's, cycling with First Lady Obama and Malia and Sasha, beach picnics, and evening dining outings.

A working vacation...

Amidst much criticism that the President is vacationing as the economy is unstable, with the stock market tumbling again Thursday, Earnest stressed that it's a working vacation. The President will be crafting a new jobs package he is expected to roll out in a speech after Labor Day, Earnest said.

"I don’t think that the American people begrudge the President spending a little time with his wife and daughters at the end of the summer before his daughters head back to school," Earnest said.

John Brennan, the President's top counter terrorism advisor, will be on the island "for the duration of the President’s time there," Earnest said. "He’ll be providing regular updates to the President to ensure that he’s properly briefed on national security issues."

Brian Deese, the Deputy Director of the National Economic Council, will travel to Martha’s Vineyard "and will spend the week there next week," Earnest said, also doing briefings.

The President arrived at Otis Air Force Base in Cape Cod, MA, aboard Air Force One at 5:25 PM Thursday. He greeted locals, held a baby, then traveled by Marine One to the island, landing at 5:58 PM. He then departed for Chilmark in his motorcade. (Above: At Andrews Air Force Base, an aide leads Bo to Air Force One for the first leg of the trip)

GOP Launches Obama Vacation Postcard Site

The Republican National Committee today unveiled ObamaGetAway.com, a website is designed to criticize President Obama's nine-day vacation on Martha's Vineyard. Users/enraged citizens can send e-postcards to pals featuring photos of the President with what are meant to be amusing but critical slogans. More than 23,000 cards had been e-mailed by this morning.

There are 18 different postcards, two featuring photos of the President with shave ice. The site also features a plea for donations to the RNC. The organization earlier this week launched a web campaign to criticize President Obama's rural bus tour.

The slogan on the postcard at top references the Slurpee Summit, a non-event from November 2010, following the mid-term elections. President Obama's standard stump speech had included a complicated story that bashed GOP candidates as Slurpee drinkers. 7-Eleven was thrilled with the attention to its signature drink after a reporter asked the President if there would be a bipartisan Slurpee Summit to mend fences when the election was over. The company launched a national Summit bus tour, driving a trailer across the US handing out free Slurpees. An offer of installing Slurpee machines at the White House was turned down by aides, and no summit happened.
