Pop Culture: President Obama Drinks "Cheerwine," A Traditional Southern Soda

Don't tell Michelle?: In North Carolina, President's food pit stops included loads of candy and BBQ, as well as a beloved regional beverage...
His wife is running a national campaign to encourage healthy eating, but President Obama enjoyed a nice cold bottle of Cheerwine during his Oct. 17th visit to Mast General Store in Boone, North Carolina, where he also purchased a very big supply of candy. Mast's community relations manager Sheri Moretz confirmed the President's selection to Obama Foodorama, after the White House today released the photo, above, of the President drinking a scarlet-colored beverage at the store's checkout counter. Cheerwine, a cola, is billed by its maker as the "singular soft drink of the South," and it's a customer favorite at Mast's. Moretz described the taste as "pretty unique, like Mr. Pibb but more cherry."

"It's one of our top sellers," Moretz said. "Cheerwine is particularly popular because you just don't see glass bottles for sodas anymore."

President Obama enjoyed his Cheerwine during one of several food pit stops he made in North Carolina during his three-day American Jobs Act bus tour. He took to joking about all the traditional, regional delights he was eating while hopping off his armored black bus.

"Don't tell Michelle exactly what was on the menu," the President said to an excited audience in a high school gym, as he described a take-out luncheon platter of smoked pork barbecue, acquired during an eat n' greet stop at Countryside Barbecue in the town of Marion.

They likely serve Cheerwine too; it has been produced since 1917, according to the company website. it was first created in Salisbury, North Carolina, and is now sold across the continental US by mail order and at brick and mortar stores.

President purchased several pounds of candy...

"He bought several pounds of candy," Moretz said. "I think the Secret Service was helping him make his choices."

A big fan of candy, the President in October complained about the overly healthy White House Halloween treats, and more candy was added to the treat bags in response.

The President's other purchases...
The President spent about $125 at Mast General Store for his purchases, and paid cash, according to Moretz. he also bought a piggy bank and a key chain with the store's logo on one side, and the phrase "A house is not a home without a dog" on the other side. Mr. Obama during his visit petted a little black dog that looked like a miniature version of First Dog Bo (above).

"Bo says hi," the President told the dog's owner.

The store had just about fifteen minute's notice before the President arrived, Moretz said, and everyone was very excited, of course.

As for the "official" White House position on soda? It's served at White House functions, and Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives Sam Kass has said that the White House will never get behind a soda tax or a soda "ban" as part of the First Lady's efforts to end childhood obesity.

“This issue is not caused by one drink,” Kass said. “It’s about a much broader food landscape.”

Candy will also suffer no White House ban, though Mrs. Obama earlier this month announced that she "confiscates" her daughter's Halloween candy after a couple of days.

Mast General Store has several locations, and the one the President visited is at at 630 West King Street, Boone, NC 28607. Phone: (866) 367-6278.

The Obamas Have Lunch With Veterans At Anna's Pizzeria in Hampton, Virginia

Eat n' Greets: President's first bus tour included lunch with veterans, too...
President Obama and First Lady Obama stopped for lunch today at Anna's Pizza and Italian Kitchen, a family-owned eatery located in a strip mall in Hampton, Virginia. The drop-by came after a morning visit to Joint Base Langley-Eustis. It was the President's fourth eat n' greet during his three-day American Jobs Act bus tour, but his first sit-down lunch. (Above, the President and Mrs. Obama greet the restaurant's owners)

According to the White House, the First Couple were joined by four veterans at the family-owned eatery, and discussed the employment challenges faced by vets when they return to the home front. Guests included Amanda Leigh, US Army Veteran, Denmark, WI; Brian Sullivan, US Army Veteran, Foxborough, MA; Jill Ann Lynch, US Navy Veteran, Butternut, WI; and Patrick L. Burrows, US Navy Veteran, Union City, PA.

The President's other eat n' greets....
The luncheon comes on the last day of President Obama's bus tour. During his maiden voyage on Ground Force One, for a bus tour through the midwest in August, the President also lunched with veterans.

Today, traveling home to the White House, the First Couple hopped off Ground Force One and visited a farmers market in Hampton, Virginia, after lunch. While rolling aboard his big armored bus, this week the President also stopped at a North Carolina general store to buy a bucketload of candy; had smoked pork barbecue from an eat n' greet stop at Countryside Barbecue in Marion, NC; and stopped by Reid's House Restaurant in Reidsville, N.C., for more take out.

President Obama Says First Lady "Doesn't Mind" If Kids Eat Halloween Candy

President stocks up on sweet treats during second foodie pitstop of American Jobs Act Bus Tour...
After a smoked pork take-out lunch gleaned at the first foodie pitstop of his three-day bus tour, President Obama on Monday afternoon stopped at the family-owned Mast General Store in Boone, North Carolina, home of Appalachian State University. The store is a candy lover's paradise, its sales floor laden with with tub after tub of confections. The President loaded a bucket with maple nut clusters, macaroons, and York Peppermint Patties to bring aboard his armored bus.

Back home at the White House, his wife was in the midst of hosting a South Lawn party for school officials from across the US, invited because they offer nutrition education and veggie-intensive school lunches to students. In the store, a clerk guided the President through the candy selection, holding the green bucket as he dug through the candy.

"So I just scoop it up?" the President asked. "That's how it's done?"

One of the reporters made a pithy observation.

"You won't find this in the White House garden, Mr. President," he said. The Eater in Chief was quick to respond.

"On Halloween, the First Lady doesn't mind," President Obama replied, smiling, as he scooped more candy into his bucket.

Rounding a corner in the store, the President was dazzled by another long candy counter. "It just goes on forever," he said.

"Bo says hi"
After putting more sweets in his bucket, Mr. Obama petted a little black dog that looked like a miniature version of First Dog Bo.

"Bo says hi," Mr. Obama said to the dog's owner.

As cameras flashed, a group of girls mugged behind the President.

"Are you guys making rabbit ears behind me?" he asked.

Then it was time to once again heft a baby, as he did while chatting up voters earlier at the barbecue joint. The lucky baby in Candyland was one-year-old Mason Wainwright, whom the President pronounced a "good-looking boy."

Later, as he shook hands in the front of the store, another baby started screaming, and the President asked, "Did someone take his camera away?" (Above: The cheeky girls mug behind the President)

Outside, the President worked two rope lines on the main street, quizzing young people about their schooling, and congratulating a young woman who said she was working on her college thesis.

The President also stopped in at Our Daily Bread bakery, though his press pool was not allowed to follow him inside. Then he climbed back aboard Ground Force One, and headed for Miller's Creek, NC, to give a speech at West Wilkes High School.

President Obama Stops At Countryside Barbecue On Day 1 Of American Jobs Act Bus Tour

President talks food safety regulations during BBQ pork pitstop...
Of course stopping for take-out is half the fun of tooling around the US in Ground Force One, the President's huge, $1.1 million armored, high-tech black bus. President Obama did just that on Monday as he surprised the lunchtime crowd at Countryside Barbecue in Marion, North Carolina. It is Day 1 of his three-day American Jobs Act Bus Tour, and the President had worked up an appetite from speaking at the Asheville Regional Airport. After snaking through the Blue Ridge Mountains along I 40, the President and his motorcade landed in the greeny enclave, population 8,075 at a little before noon. Marion's motto is "Where Main Street meets the Mountains." Today Marion got to meet the President.

"It is packed," Mr. Obama said as he surveyed the busy eatery. "There's not a seat open."

Countryside was ready for Halloween, according to pool, complete with pumpkins and a scarecrow. To a soundtrack of country music, the President, surrounded by delighted staff and patrons, stood at the counter and placed his order: A barbecue platter (slow smoked chopped pork, with two sides) and a large sweet tea.
Of course the visit was less about lunch than it was about face time with voters. The President began moving through the dining area to greet customers, and went from banquette to banquette. There were hugs and some baby whispering. (Above: Wrangling a young local)

Talking about fed regulations...
The lunchtime patrons might have been ordered from Central Casting: The President chatted with a group of uniformed paramedics; four women dressed in Native American garb, members of a senior citizen line dancing troupe; and a member of the City Council.

The President lingered at one table with three men, discussing US exports and regulations. One of the men, Dan Kuehnert, a lawyer, pressed the President to reduce government regulations.

"Now I got to tell you, there are some regulations that make sure our kids get safe food. So we got to balance that," the President said.

The deadly cantaloupe listeria outbreak and the massive Cargill ground turkey recall are cases in point.

35 minutes after he arrived, Mr. Obama emerged with a plastic bag holding styrofoam cartons, presumably his lunch to go. (The President waves to photographers as he departs)

He waved and boarded Ground Force One, and was back on the road, off to speak at a North Carolina high school. But first, there was a stop to stock the bus with candy, courtesy of a general store in Boone, NC.

During his maiden voyage on Ground Force One, a three-day bus tour through the midwest in August, the President managed to stop for pie, ice cream, popcorn, and more pie, among other duties, such as holding four town halls and a rural economic forum.
